Sonic or Sonic the Hedgehog is the hero of the video game of the same name created by
Sega. Sonic is the character of a video game released in 1991. He was created by Yuji Naka and Naoto Oshima in order to fight
Nintendo's mascot
Mario.
Sonic became Sega's flagship and he also became one of the world's best known characters. The game series Sonic the Hedgehog sold over 45 millions copies and Sonic is now known as the fastest hedgehog in the world.
Sonic was designed as a blue anthropomorphic hedgehog whose main ability was to be faster than the speed of sound. Sometimes, Sonic is compared to the wind; he is unpredictable, fast and most of all free. He is independent and acts when he wishes to.
When Sega created Sonic they wanted a game capable of selling over one million copies. This is why they had an intense brainstorming in order to create their new mascot. During this brainstorming many character designs were submitted, but Sonic was the chosen one, his blue colour, and his personality was made in order to represent Sega.
This worked perfectly; Sonic soon became known throughout the world as the anti Mario and Sega succeeded in creating a mascot able to fight against Nintendo's hegemony...
