The PlayStation 3 or PS3 is a video game console produced by
Sony Computer Entertainment and it succeeded to the
PlayStation 2. It is part of the PlayStation series and it is made to compete with
Microsoft's Xbox 360, and
Nintendo's Wii.
The PlayStation 3 has an online gaming service (PlayStation Network), some solid multimedia capabilities as its connectivity with the
PlayStation Portable (PSP), and a next-gen optical media, the Blu-Ray Disc.
The PlayStation 3 was released in 2006 in Japan and in North America, and in 2007 in Europe and Oceania. Since this release 10.49 millions units were sold (as of January 1, 2008), 1,673,063 in Japan, 3,250,000 in the United States, 2,800,000 in Europe. Unfortunatly for Sony, they are behind the Wii and the Xbox 360 in sales in most months since this console was released.
Despite all this the PS3 is sure to become one of the best consoles in a few years. Its hardware is praised by many different websites and when developers will use all its capacities it will become "the console of choice for gaming.
Until then, Sony will have to wait, and hope that its competitors will see their sell go down...
