The Sega genesis is a 16-bit video game console released by
Sega in Japan in 1988 and North America in 1989.
It was sold under the name Sega Genesis in North America as Sega was unable to secure legal rights to the Mega Drive name in that region.
The Sega genesis was the successor to the Sega Master System and was Sega's third home console and second to be sold outside of Japan.
It is part of the fourth generation era of consoles, and the first of its generation to achieve notable market share in Europe and North America. It was a direct competitor of the Super Nintendo released two years later.
At this time,
Nintendo was holding 95% of the North American video game market and 92 of the Japanese market.
For its release in Europe MegaDrive is very well sold. It even manages to exceed the hegemony of Nintendo thanks to its legendary game '
Sonic the Hedgehog' and its four million games sold came as a divine gift to compete against the market leader.
This console was clearly Sega's biggest success with its nearly 31 million copies sold, scores that the famous brand will never be able to have again as its production ended with the last new game being released in 2002 in Brazil.
