The
Nintendo GameCube, also known as the Dolphin during the developing phase, is a video game console released in 2001 (2002 in Europe), by the company Nintendo and it was developed in association with IBM, Nec and ATI. It was the last of the 6th generation consoles to be released and it competed with the
PlayStation 2 and the
Xbox.
The Nintendo GameCube looks like a cube with a handle on the top. It uses a unique format, the mini DVD, in order to limit the loading time that was very frustrating at that time on the competitors like the PS2. The GameCube is the smallest console of its generation and its design was drawn by Kenishiro Ashida who wanted to create an innovating and compact object.
Nintendo sold 21.72 million GameCube in the entire world, 4.02 million in Japan, 12.94 in the United States and 4.76 million in the rest of the world. The best selling game was
Super Smash Bros. Melee with 6 million games sold.
This console wasn't the success Nintendo expected but it led to the creation of the
Wii which is sure to become the success of the 7th generation console.
