Game gear

The game gear is a color videogame console released in 1990 by Sega to compete against the hegemony of the Nintendo Gameboy released a year before.

It was released on October 6th 1990 in Japan, in 1991 in Europe and the USA. The game gear looks a lot like the Master System and this explains the similarities in the games available to play.

Despite its colour screen and its games, the Game gear never had the success of its rival mainly because of its high consumption of batteries but also the price of the console which was about twice the one of the Nintendo.

Still, some Game Gear games became cult such as Sonic the Hedgehog. Since then, many fans were still awaiting for a return of their console.

In 2001, Majesco, had the idea to produce it again by buying the rights to Sega but unfortunately no continuation was made. In 2006, Mediatronic launches the pocket gear, a compact edition which included game gear and Master System games.
