Cyberpunk refers to a sub-genre of science fiction. It deals with the effect an oppressive society dominated by computer technology.
It is a dark, pessimistic and negative view of the near future, often with psychedelic effects, dangerous morality.
Most of the time it describes a society with an advanced science, for example high information technology and cybernetics, coupled with a degree of breakdown or radical change in the society.
The cyberpunk genre is used in movies,
mangas, anime, and literature.
The cyberpunks stories deal most of the time with conflict among artificial intelligences, and megacorporations.
The most famous examples of the use of the cyberpunk genre are the movie
Blade Runner, the Matrix trilogy
Matrix trilogy and so on. Concerning the manga we can quote
Ghost in the Shell that perfectly presents the cyberpunk concepts.
In the cyberpunk literature metaphors are often used to criticize the present-day worries about the failings of corporations, corruption in governments, alienation and surveillance technology.
Eventually we can say that the cyberpunk movement is a way to disquiet people and call them to action.
Its main goal is to open people mind and to make them aware that they are too much dependent on technology and show them what could happen if they do not react quickly.
Some critics said that the cyberpunk movement was a call for revolution but it seems that it is more a call for carefulness.
