Day of the Tentacle is a graphical adventure game developed and published by LucasArts, released in 1993 for DOSand Mac OS. This is a single-player game.
Day of the Tentacle is really fun game and was extremely well-received when it was launched. It was even considered at the time to be one of the best games in the adventure genre. This is a sequel of the Maniac Mansion game.
It was praised for its hilarious and extremely well-realized gameplay, the innovative creations available, such as the various playable characters, and the originality of its storyline.
In the Day of tentacle to play with the three characters you will have first to solve some puzzles; then you can switch between any one of the three playable characters at any time.
The three characters can share inventory items at any time, which is very useful for the completion of many puzzles.
Besides many puzzles are based on time travel and the effects of aging on objects, the effects of this changing are used as part of the solution.
As in many adventure game the character cannot die, which is a big difference compared to Maniac Mansion.
The game takes place five years after the events told in Maniac Mansion.
At the beginning of the game you learn that the Purple Tentacle, a bizarre biological creation of the mad scientist Dr. Fred Edison, was accidentally exposed to a toxic industrial gas and became a formidable and evil intelligence that gives it the ambition to dominate the world.
The mad scientist catches Purple and Green Tentacle, a friendly non-evil creature, and decides to kill both of them.
Green tentacle asks his old friend Bernard (an intellectual man) to come for rescuing him. Bernard decides to come with his friends, Laverne (who is a slight psychotic medical student), and Hoagie (former member of a rock band).
Bernard manages to free the Tentacles, but he discovers what Purples plans are to rule world.
Dr Edison tries to send the three friends back in time, to avoid the creation of purple. But his machine does not work properly, as he used an imitation diamond as the power source, and the three friends are separated.
Hoagie is 200 years in the past at the moment of the creation of the Constitution of the US, and Laverne 200 years in the future in a world dominated by the Tentacles where the humans are treated as pets.
Bernard remains in the present day and is charged by the mad scientist to find a real diamond to power the time machine to allow the return of his friends. Hoagie and Laverne have also to find their own power source to power their units.
Your mission is to restore the course of time and destroy Purple.
