Penumbra Black Plague is a first-person shooteradventure and survival horror computer game developed by Frictional Games and published by Paradox Interactive, released in February 2008 for Linux, Windows, and Mac Os. This is a single-player game.
Black Plague is the second episode of the Penumbra series; originally these series was intended as a trilogy but was finally reduced to two episodes due to unidentified problems with previous publisher.
But this second episode was well-received by critics for the quality of its continuing storyline, captivating gameplay elements and the beauty of the graphics. The general atmosphere is similar to the first game and is particularly terrifying.
Like the previous episode Black Plague is an exploration-based adventure game.
Although the game is presented as a first-person adventure game, it also contains elements of first-person shooter and survival horror gameplay.
Gameplay features a mixture of exploration and solving physical. In comparison to the previous episode, combat has been heavily de-emphasized.
Players will no longer be able to acquire melee weapons or create makeshift traps to fight enemies with. Instead, the emphasis is on the use of stealth and fleeing to avoid attacks by enemy creatures.
Continuing from where the previous episode left off (Penumbra Overture), Philip wakes up in a small cell. After finding a way out from his prison, he finds some hints that his father
Howard might still be alive in this underground laboratory. However, Philip also realised that he might not be alone in this hostile underworld.
During your exploration through the underground facility you also have to battle against the voices inside your head while avoiding the traps and infected creatures that want to kill you.
The environment is very dark and puzzles are more complex than similar games, requiring extensive object manipulation, combined with a realistic physics engine where the mouse is used to open drawers, turn valves on tools and throw or stack objects.
Important items are stored in an inventory, with quick slots. The player can take multiple hits and restore health through painkillers. The game uses fixed save points, represented as ancient objects.
Where the first game introduced the character Red as a dubious radio sidekick, the second game makes interaction more complex, as Philip is contact with a certain Dr. Amabel Swanson as well as with Clarence, a conflicting voice inside his head as a second personality due to the effects of an infection. Clarence is able to cause effects such as déjà vus (playable sequences), distorted reality and a lack of control over vision and movement.
Thanks to its extremely well-written story you will really enjoy this game and you also will learn more about the mysteries lying in the mine.
