Castle of the Winds is an action and role-playingcomputer game developed by SaadaSoft and published by Epic MegaGames, released first in 1989 for Windows. It is a single-player game.
This game was generally well-received and offers many similarities with the game Rogue, a very famous game in the 80s. Moreover it also features many original and innovative elements (for its time) as well as an interesting and well-written storyline.
Castle of the Winds is originally composed of two parts. The first one A Question of Vengeance was first released as a shareware and the second Lifthransir s Bane was sold. Later the two parts were gathered and sold together. Since 1998 the entire game is distributed free of charge.
This game has a long lifespan as the replayability is great; indeed some of the dungeon level are randomly generated and will be different with each gameplay.
Castle of the Winds plot is loosely based on Norse Mythology. It is told with setting changes unique items and occasional passages of text. You will have to explore many different areas and your main mission will consist of killing as many monsters as possible.
You will explore three towns, each with a cavern or a dungeon nearby that is full of baddies, most of the time undead or mythical, but many of them are carrying interesting and useful items for you. There are a total of 40 dungeons levels to explore.
At the beginning of the game a tragedy happens, your character s hamlet is completely destroyed by monsters living in the mine nearby. You play as a young boy, Hrungir and while you were absent some cruel monsters burned your farm and killed your godparents.
Your first mission is to infiltrate the mine where the creatures are living and kill them; you will also have to figure out who is responsible for ordering your godparents death.
During your search and to achieve your mission you will be able to use magic. Indeed the game favors the use of magic in combat, as spells are the only weapons that work from a distance.
Your character will automatically gain a spell with each experience level, and you will be able gain other spells by using the proper books. There are about 30 spells available within Castle of the Winds. The spells are divided into six categories attack, defense, healing, movement, divination and miscellaneous.
Throughout the game you will explore several cities that all offer the same general offering, that is to say the Olaf s Junk Store (that will buy all you have to sell but offer nothing to you), the temple of Odin, where you can restore your health for free; a sage who will identify items; a blacksmith that deals in weapons and armor; and a general store that sells potions, etc. You can also find banks and other merchants in larger fortress or cities.
As Castle of the Wind is a turn-based game players and monsters cannot attack each other at the same time. However their speed can vary, in other words the monster may be able to make several steps or strike at you several times before you can respond, and vice-versa.
When you achieve your mission and win, you are ranked in ValhallaValhalla s Champions (the high score list) in order of shortest to longest time to complete the game.
