Beyond Time is a point-and-clickadventure game developed by Jones and Jones Multimedia and published by DreamCatcher Interactive, released in 1997.
Beyond time received both criticisms and acclaims. This game is based on the novel Obelisk written by Dr. Judith KayeJones.
Within the game some cinematics are available that give you a good vision of the Ancient Egypt and that allow you to learn more about the plot.
It was praised for its beautiful graphics and well-detailed and colorful and offers an interesting world to explore; but it was criticized for being too short and was not extremely original, as it offers about 33 references to the other games developed by Jones Multimedia.
Beyond Time starts when your character is appointed by his boss, a museum curator. You learn that despite the use of the most advanced security systems priceless artifacts and old treasures are disappearing from museums all over the world, like the Michelangelo s Pieta or the Tutankhamencollection.
Your job will consist of finding the culprits and discover how they managed to steal these precious items. Your first mission will take place in Egypt where you will have to go to an archeological dig in Abydos.
As soon as you arrive in Abydos, in the Temple of Osiris, you hear about rumors of strange occurrences, and you are conveniently pushed through a time gate back to Ancient Egypt.
So your mission now is to understand what happened to you but you also have to figure out where are the stolen artifacts. You rapidly meet other time-travelers who are just like you locked in the past.
You will also discover that another archeological expedition is looking in Ancient Egypt for artifacts. But their presence could provoke changes in the past and consequently could have repercussions on the future itself.
The major part of Beyond Time takes place in Egypt but throughout the game and as you will be tracking down the thieves you will be able to visit Lhasa (Tibet), The MayanCity of Tikal (South America) and also Atlantis at different time periode.
You have to avoid such a catastrophe and save the future, the present and the past, in other world save the world. The plot is quite complex and involves an interesting paradox of time, maybe too difficult to understand sometimes but at least challenging for your brain.
Nevertheless Beyond Time manages to remain cohesive despite its intriguing and complex storyline.
You will have to collect items and solve puzzles by using them. To complete the puzzles you often will have to read carefully books and scrolls to extract the relevant information. Careful observation and note taking would be also extremely useful to solve the puzzles.
