Riven the Sequel to Myst is a graphic point-and-clickadventure game developed by Cyan and published by various companies such as Sega, Acclaim, etc; released in 1997 for Windows, Sega Saturn, Mac Os, and Pocket PC. This is a single-player game.

Riven, as the sequel of a very famous game, was obviously eagerly anticipated. It received generally positive reviews from the gaming press as it offers an improved version of the original game for the visuals, graphics, and gameplay elements.

And consequently this was a commercial success, even if some critics asserted the game could have been even more original.

Riven s story continues where Myst, and its companion novel Myst the Book of Atrus, ended.

After short introduction, you are given a book with lots of pages that you can, but do not have to read, and transported to the Riven Island. At the beginning of Riven, you are returned to Dni, where you are reunited with Myst s protagonist Atrus.

Whereas in Myst the objective of the game is to travel to different Ages to solve puzzles before returning to a hub Age, Riven s gameplay takes place on the five islands of the Age of Riven.

Unlike Myst, these islands have human inhabitants, although you will be hard-pressed to actually see any. There are plenty of spherical, earthen huts and occasional fleeting human encounters, but there is no interaction or dialogue.

Much of it consists of solving puzzles to access new areas of the islands, though players are also able to explore without fulfilling objectives. Many puzzles sole purpose is to advance the backstory.

You play as the Stranger, the protagonist of the first game and friend of Atrus. Atrus is the creator of books that serve as links to other worlds, known as Ages; the ability to write these books is known as the Art.

Atrus needs the Stranger s help to free his wife, Catherine, who is trapped on the slowly collapsing Age of Riven by his unhinged father, Gehn.

Atrus and Catherine had previously trapped Gehn on Riven by removing all linking books from that Age; the very last book to be removed, linking to the island of Myst, was the one they held to escape Riven.

Riven s two major puzzles require solving several miniproblems that in turn require close observation of Riven s denizens, colors, and unique numbering system.

Riven is also full of living things. Where in Myst we had a few ambient seagulls and butterflies, Riven is literally abuzz with golden beetles, brightly colored toads called Ytrams, and strange creatures known as Wharks and Sunners. Everything in this game look ancient and this is extremely pleasant.
