Wik and the Fable of Souls is a platform game developed and published by Reflexive Entertainment, released in 2004 for Windows and in 2005 for Xbox 360. This is a single-player game. The game includes a story mode and a challenge mode.
This game received generally extremely positive reviews from the gaming press. It was praised and was even awarded for its well-detailed and very beautiful graphics, interesting puzzles and long lifespan. This game will keep you busy for a while with its challenging gameplay.
Wik takes place in fictional universe where you will play as Wik a frog-man like character. Wik can use a combination of jumping and his long grappe-like tongue to navigate the world.
Wik s adventures are divided into 14 level sets of 5 levels (so over 120 levels overall). The game also features a challenge mode which involves practicing acrobatic and other tricks used during normal gameplay. Each stage is a self-contained 2D screen full of trees, moving platforms and rock formations.
Throughout the game you will be accompanied by a mule-like creature named Slotham. On each level the player must capture a set number of grubs and deliver them to Slotham, but when you get the grubs to Slotham becomes more and more challenging.
If Slotham reaches the end of the screen before you collect the required number of grubs, you lose. Luckily you can slow Slotham down by spitting puddles of honey in his path.
But Wik is not the only creature who likes the grubs. He must fend off flies and bats who also seek them. And there are also the scorpions.
You will also be accosted by increasing amounts of deadly insects, some of which are poisonous and others destructible only by special methods.
There are various bugs that try to steal the grubs or directly harm Wik, and on some levels Wik can fall off the platforms into the abyss. In each level you will have to collect three gems (a ruby, an emerald, and a diamond) and it is required to find them in order to achieve the best ending.
Wik has online leaderboards where you can check your scores against others. You will also find a number of achievements you can aspire to attain, the majority of which are creatively designed and give you new goals to shoot for.
Wik also features a local multiplayer mode for up to four players, in which you and your friends can see who is the slowest and the quickest. There are three multiplayer game types, including tag, plague and fire pit. The first two games are competitive, whereas the third one is more about survival (indeed you are constantly jumping from platforms that keep dropping from the top of the screen into lava).
Wik & the Fable of Souls is a mix of challenging, intelligent gameplay and an intriguing, fairy-tale presentation that will appeal to just about anyone.
