Ikaruga is a shoot'em up released in 2002 on GameCube, developed by Treasure and published by Atari. Called Project RS2 during its development, Ikaruga was anticipated to be a sequel of Radiant Silvergun a very popular shoot'em regarded as one of the best games of its kind. Ikaruga was also released in 2008 on Xbox Live arcade.
The history of the game takes place after the defeat of Shinra in Radiant Silvergun. The fighter plane of the hero crashed into the village of Ikaruga after his fight against Tenro Horai. After being helped by the villagers, Shinra said he would continue his battle. He will then use the Ikaruga a brand new revolutionary fighter plane which has just been designed.
As Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga is a shoot'em up with a vertical scrolling, mixing 2D and 3D elements. However Ikaruga offers an innovation in gameplay, namely alternation between white fire and black fire. Thus, the color of the vessel changes with the color of the bullets. The enemy fire is also two-coloured, in black or white. When the ship's hero has the same color as the enemy fire, it absorbs its bullets which fill a gauge that provides to launch a devastating blow once full. However, if a shot of the opposite color reaches the Ikaruga, it is instantly destroyed. We must, therefore, constantly alternate between the two colors, taking into consideration enemy blasts.
With its very high difficulty Ikaruga is a game reserved for hardcore gamers.
Anyone who appreciates what makes a truly great game should be able to recognize Ikaruga for its elegant design, aesthetic beauty, and sheer challenge.
