Spore is a god game, life simulation, and a real-time-strategy currently under development by Maxis, due to be released in late 2008 (in Europe and North America) for Windows and Mac OS X. This will be a single-player game.
You will control the evolution of a species from its beginning as unicellular organism, through development as an intelligent and social creature, to interstellar exploration as a spacefaring culture (whereupon it interacts with alien species across the galaxy).
Thus game allows you to customize your creature; indeed between each stage you can add or subtract elements that affect the look and performance of your organism. So you can color your organism (called spore) to look as beautiful as you wish.
For example Flagellum will help with speed and spikes act as defense against incoming enemies. To evolve you have to find the appropriate DNA to upgrade your organism.
You have to eat and kill smaller organisms to get evolution points. And once you amass enough points you lay an egg and this takes you to the Creature editor (to customize your creature).
Through your organism evolution you will go through several phases, there are the Tide pool phase (cell phase) you must deal with fluid dynamic and avoid to be eaten by predators.
The Creature Phase, other creatures will inhabit the world, you will have also to hunt food, reproduce by locating a mate (and create friendship with it) to lay an egg that you will have to protect, then with your DNA points you can make your creature evolve.
The Tribal Phase, when your creature brain is evolved enough you will be given a hut and a group of fully evolved creatures as well as two of the six super powers featured within the game, your main goal is to make evolve your group by several ways.
The Civilization Phase, in which your tribal camp is now a city, you will dispose of two new editors the building and vehicle editors, you can choose one of the three civilizations available in Spore.
And finally the Space Phase, you have new goals to achieve to spread your civilization through the universe, you can now terraform and colonize neighboring uninhabitable planets.
But the creatures, vehicles, and buildings the player can create will be uploaded automatically to a central database (or a peer-to-peer system), catalogued and rated for quality, and then re-distributed to populate other player s games.
When you progress to a new stage, Spore will import creatures as needed. For example, if a flying carnivore is needed to balance the ecosystem, a creature that fits that description will be downloaded.
The editor is also a neat feature in this upcoming game. With this editor you can design everything from your species, to your buildings, to your vehicles that include tanks, aircraft, submarines, boats, and UFO s.
