Deus Ex : The Conspiracy

Deus Ex is a first person shooter, using many elements of role-playing games, released on PC and Mac in 2000, and then on Playstation 2 in 2002. This game was developed by Ion Storm Austin and published by Eidos Interactive. With Deus Ex, Warren Spector and Harvey Smith offer a gaming experience never seen before for that time, with a rich universe and a gameplay of great complexity.

The game takes place in a futuristic cyber punk world. A strange disease, known as the "Grey Death" ravages the world's population and there is no treatment that can stop its spread. However, a miracle cure that has already proved its effectiveness was synthesized. But this vaccine, called Ambrosia, exists only in very limited quantities and is available only to those deemed "vital to the social order". So common people that are not government officials, military personnel, eminent scientists or famous intellectuals, have no hope of victory in their fight against the Grey Death. As a result many terrorist groups emerged, as the NSF (National Secessionist Force) and the French group Silhouette, in order to recover the rare Ambrosia created by Versalife Company. The player takes control of J.C. Denton, a human being modified by nanotechnology working for an international organization created to combat terrorism throughout the world, called UNATCO (United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition). The story of the game then starts in a bunker, one of the UNATCO?s bases hidden on Liberty Island.

Deus Ex is divided into various missions that the player must fulfill in order to make progress in the game. The great feature of Deus ex is to propose a broad freedom of action and approach of the different missions. The player controls therefore J.C. Denton with first person view and has the option to face the different situations that he will encounter as he sees fit. We can choose to play in a violent way by using firearms and eliminating the enemies, opt for a more discreet approach by using infiltration, attempt to wriggle out of the situation through dialogue, and there are still many other alternatives.

The way to deal with a situation is often chosen according to the characteristics that the player has developed. Thus, as in an RPG, J.C. Denton earns experience points by eliminating opponents or by performing some specific actions. These experience points are then used to improve the skills of the hero. There are altogether 11 different skills that are offered to the player, as the handling of various firearms, hacking, hooking, or medical care. The player can customize his character at his convenience, according to his style of play. However, it is impossible to improve all the proficiencies to their maximum; we must choose to develop skills at the expense of others.

In addition to these innate abilities, JC Denton may have recourse to cybernetic implants. There are 8 types of cyber implants that could be inserted in different parts of the body (hands, arms, eyes, legs, feet, head, skin and torso). For example, an implant used on the arms increases the strength of the hero and allow him to lift heavy objects and an implant in the eyes can improve his accuracy with firearms. Like the other skills, the player must make choices among these superhuman abilities.

Unlike most other FPS, Deus Ex offers some interactions with the various non-player characters of the game, and these interactions could be quite important. The player can then discuss with all the characters he met in order to obtain information about the universe and the intrigue of the game. These dialogues are often multiple-choice dialogue and can trigger many different reactions from the interlocutor. The player can also learn more about the world of Deus Ex by reading newspapers, information terminals or e-mails scattered throughout the game. They can also provide important information such as access codes or passwords that can be used to advance in the game

The catchword of Two Ex is freedom of action. So even if the main framework of the story remains roughly the same whatever the choice made by the player, three different endings are offered depending on what choice the player will decide to take at the very end of the game.

For many gamers Deus Ex is regarded as one of the best video games ever. Its fascinating scenario, its rich and complex universe, its original gameplay allowing impressive freedom of action and customization of the hero make Deus Ex offering a mature and exceptional gaming experience.

Deus Ex : The Conspiracy reviews

From a technical standpoint, Deus Ex shows its age and the limitations of the PS2. But the underlying game is widely considered to be a classic, and with good reason.
