Battle Mages is a role-playing and strategy computer game developed by Buka Entertainment and published by Targem Games, released in 2004 for Windows. This is a single-player and multiplayer game.
Battle mages received both criticisms and acclaims; it was considered as a quite beautiful game (graphics, sounds, etc.) but was also criticized for its lack of originality. Nevertheless it is a very interesting game that offers all the enjoyable characteristics of a good RPG title.
The game takes place in a fantasy world where are living several races such as elves, dwarves, Orcs, Goblins, but also Humans. However the dwarves are now living in the underground.
This universe exists apart from Chaos through the use of the mysterious Magic Crystal. This Crystal has the power to give life to the World; outside of the area protected by the Crystal there is the Chaos that contains nothing but evil.
Unfortunately an evil wizard used trickery to destroy the Crystal and he managed to provoke a war between Humans and Elves to destroy it. But the Humans were successful and defeated the Elves.
The evil wizard refused to renounce to his plans and he brought the undead and other monsters to be able to destroy the Crystal.
You will play as a young mage who is about to be graduated in magic. At the beginning of Battle Mages you will be able to choose your character among the 4 available (3 types of mages ad a mage specialized in tactics). Then you will have to learn to fight as a battle mage.
Your mission is to search for the crystal and obviously to find in order to prevent the Chaos that is threatening your world.
You will have to explore the several areas of the game and collect weapons, armors and artifacts. You will also be able to interact with the non-playable characters within the game.
You will be able to use new spells as you will acquire skill points. These skill points will allow you to buy spells from the three basic Areas Chaos, Nature and Energy. You can acquire experience points by killing enemy units or vicious an evil creatures. You can decide whether to be a powerful mage and fight by magic, or instead focus your attention towards leadership and lead large armies into battle.
Throughout the game you will also have to control troop units during battles. These units will have various abilities depending on your own skills levels; that is to say the most experience and skills you have the most skilled units you will have.
You will start with the most basic units conscripted with swordsmen and archers. These units can be bought in any town, but the units that you already control can be upgraded.
