Echo Night Beyond is an adventure video game developed by From Software and published by From Software Agetec and Nobilis, released in 2004 (in US and Japan) then in 2006 ( in Europe) for the PlayStation 2. It is a single-player game.
Echo Night Beyond has been both criticized and praised, some critics claim that it is not an original game and that the storyline is linear, and other acclaim its beautiful graphics and its interesting scenario. So it is up to you to enjoy or dislike it.
The game takes place in space, on the Moon, in the not-too distant future (2044). You play as Richard Osmon and you have just survived a crash. You will have to explore the base, figure out what went wrong there and mainly manage not to be killed by ghosts!
At the beginning of the game you learn that now the Moon is a tourist attraction and work facility. You and your fiancée Claudia Selfer, had decided to make a space journey to the Moon to marry there.
During the trip an unpredicted engineering problems happens and your vessel crashed on the Moon into a lunar mining facility.
When you awake you are in your spacesuit but your fiancée disappeared. You do not even know if she survived or not. Then you decide to explore the base to find her.
Unfortunately for you even if the base is desert some weird inhabitants remain ghosts! And they are not particularly friendly.
Throughout the game you will learn that the miners recently discovers a mysterious red stone and after that a thick fog of unknown origin started to spread and people started to disappear one after the other, but their spirits did not and they are extremely hostile.
You will have to speak with the friendly ghost and discover why their soul is not free and consequently find the solution to free their souls.
In the areas cover by the mysterious fog the spirits will try to attack and kill you whereas in the clear ones they will try to help you.
When you are attacked by a ghost you cannot protect yourself or shoot it, you only chance is to run but you have to stop before your heart rate reaches a certain number. If you do not stop when required you die of a heart attack.
The only tool available is a flashlight but if you do not have batteries anymore you have to find another one or you will have to complete the game in almost complete darkness.
Throughout the game you will also have access to several monitor rooms in which you can see where the ghosts are and even watch records that will reveal you what happened to the inhabitants
