R-Type Command is a tactical turn based shooting game developed and published by Irem and Atlus, exclusively for the PSP.
The R-type classic game has evolved, the time where you used to simply press the firing button and destroying everything in your way is gone. Now, you're in charge of a whole fleet that you send to fight against the usual enemies. Each mission starts with a blue grid where you can place your army. Every ship can execute one movement and action per turn (missions consisting of more or less 35 turns). You'll also have to choose a flagship, as your commander. If this ship is destroyed (even if you still have other ships) will automatically mean the failure of the mission.
In time, you'll be able to choose new ships with new abilities that will make your life much easier (the bombers are life-savers). To add a little difficulty, your ships can no longer shoot indefinetly like the classic so you'll have to check that their ammunition is full as well as the fuel. Each different ship has different weapons and utilities that you can choose from. However, be careful as each unit costs a certain amount and resources are rare.
R-Type Command is a new direction for the series that realizes well its objective. The game is as addictive as the classic and hasn't lost its magic touch. For the fans of the previous R-Type, you might have some trouble at first but you'll enjoy it just as much with the main characteristics of the series staying the same. For others, this is your Advance Wars for the PSP, and deserves to be tried.
