Viking Battle for Asgard is an action and hack and slash adventure video game developed by Creative Assembly and published by Sega, released in 2008 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It is a single-player game.

Viking Battle for Asgard was both criticized and acclaimed; its epic battles were praised, as well as the brutality of combat and the overall concept; but other critics asserted that its storyline lacked of originality and the gameplay was quite repetitive.

The game is based on Norse Mythologyduring the war between the gods that has sparked further conflict in the mortal realm of Midgard where Freya schampion Skarin must lead the Viking forces against the troops of the Goddess Hel.

Indeed the Goddess Hel has been banished from the heavenly kingdom of Asgard for defying Odin s rule. The Goddess is furious and wants to have her revenge; she decides to release an ancient god that is supposed to be able to bring about Ragnarok, that is to say the apocalyptic battle that will destroy Asgard and the gods. She gathers her army made of resurrected Vikings warriors and marches on the kingdom of Midgard.

Freya, goddess of war is charged for stopping Hel and defending mankind, for that she has to choose a champion. She chooses Skarin who is a great but troubled young warrior, who ignores the true reason of his favor.

Viking battle for Asgard features an open-world-experience; you will have to explore three islands of the world of Midgard that you can explore freely. You will be able to search and find your Viking soldiers and rescue them, and in return they will assist you during battles.

Midgard universe offers plenty of castles which the player can attack and capture. Once you achieve to complete your missions on each island, you will have to fight in a large battle, which can consist of a great siege or a clash between large armies, with hundreds of soldiers fighting to the death.

To weaken your enemy you can use several methods, such as killing their shaman (sorcerer) who are able to summon enemy troops, or you can get into the main fight and use combat moves and combos to kill enemy soldiers and champions, who drop dragon runes.

These runes can be used to call upon dragons that will be able to attack your enemies from the air and destroy them.

You will have to achieve the three major missions in the three islands, but the game also provides you several minor missions while playing.

Your attacks are limited at the beginning of the game, but throughout the game you will have the possibility to purchase upgrades and then acquire new attacks and combos.
