VIEWTIFUL JOE

Ps2

Viewtiful Joe is a beat'em all released on October 7, 2003 for Game Cube, developed by Capcom Production Studio 4 and published by Capcom. The game has also been adapted on Playstation 2 on August 24, 2004, with some new bonus contents compared to the Game Cube version.

In this game in cell-shading, we incarnate Joe, a young movie-goer. While he was watching an old episode of Captain Blue in his favorite movie theater accompanied by his girlfriend Sylvia, the bad guy of the movie came out of the screen and kidnapped the young woman. Then the giant robot hero took Joe with him and jump into the other side of the screen. Propelled into the fabulous world of movies, Joe became a super hero and went in search of his beloved Sylvia, guided by his model and mentor the notorious Captain Blue.

The player moves on a colorful environment, with a horizontal scrolling, and eliminates the enemies that appear on the screen. The more we play and get rid of opponents with style without suffering damage, the more we will get a high score at the end of level. These score with notation allocate points that can then be exchanged for objects or new combos and special moves.

During his progress in the wonderful world of cinema, Joe acquires new powers that affect time. So he can slow down the time in order to inflict more powerful attacks and throw his opponents in the air, or accelerate time, increasing his attack speed, which may even inflame enemies. There is also the zoom which allows once triggered executing devastating attacks. You can switch in real-time between these 3 capabilities which give a genuine flexibility of gameplay. These powers can also solve some small puzzles that scatter the game.

Each level, presented each time as the new episode of a series, is filled with reference to the cinema, such as the films: "Jaws," "Star Wars" or "Some Like it hot ".

Viewtiful Joe is a game full of humour, pleasant to go, despite a very tough difficulty, which has became a major game on Game Cube. A second episode was also released and several spins offs appeared on portable consoles.

VIEWTIFUL JOE reviews

Viewtiful Joe deftly delivers a fantastic look while also adding a really great series of unique gameplay twists that make it much, much better than the average side-scrolling action game.

My favorite GameCube title of 2003, Viewtiful Joe comes to PS2 with everything I loved about this unique platforming/fighting hybrid intact: tight controls (which translate just fine to the DualShock), unique art style, tongue-in-cheek humor, and, of course, deeply satisfying gameplay. The freedom to mix and match all of the different attacks, along with time-altering special abilities, makes each and every one of Joe's countless fights--especially the superb boss battles--a new experience.
