Sonic adventure is a platform game released on Dreamcast on 9 September 1999 in North America, developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega. This is the very first episode of the famous Sonic series entirely in 3D. A director's cut version was released in 2003 as Sonic Adventure DX for the Nintendo GameCube.
In this episode Dr. Eggman wants to destroy the city of Station Square to build over his own city. Then he stole a chaos emerald that Tails, Sonic's faithful companion, used for his experiments. He used then this emerald on a mysterious aqueous creature called Chaos in order to use its power to serve his dark plans. However, the creature was too powerful and became uncontrollable. Sonic will then need to seek and collect the other chaos emeralds and prevent Chaos to destroy the world.
Throughout his adventure Sonic will be joined by several other characters that are playable and have their own adventure. There are Tails, the two-tailed fox, Knuckles the echidna, Amy Rose a female hedgehog who loves Sonic, E-102 Gamma a robot that have feelings built by Eggman, and finally Big the Cat, a cat that loves fishing desperately seeking his friend Froggy. It is only after completing the stories of the 6 playable characters that the player will face the last boss in an explosive battle.
The game stands out in 2 different phases: Adventure fields and Action Stages. The Adventure Fields are open environments in which Sonic can move freely and discuss with different protagonists. It is also from the Adventure Fields that the player accesses Action Stages. These are levels that the player has to cross by fulfilling objectives. Each Action Stage includes 3 objectives depending on the characters. The Sonic's Action Stages are based on speed while those of the Big Cat are small party of fishing.
The player can also raise small creatures called Chao, just like tamagotchi, and make them do numerous activities.
Sonic Adventure make the Sonic series pass to the 3D with verve. Focusing on speed this episode has nothing to envy to the previous opuses in 2D, despite a camera sometimes capricious.
