Killer 7 is a strange game born from the unfettered imagination of its designer Goichi Suda. Developed by the studio Grasshopper Manufacture and published by Capcom, this game was released on July 7, 2005 on gamecube and Playstation 2.
The player embodies Harman Smith, an old professional killer in wheelchair who has seven different personalities. He will face a strange terrorist threat called "Heaven Smile", led by Kun Lan a mysterious psychopath. He uses a virus transforming people into heaven smiles which are laughing monsters that explode at contact with people.
Killer 7 is a real UFO among video games because of its strange atmosphere, its destabilizing gameplay, and a desultory but hypnotic narration. We move through different levels being directed by invisible rails, restricting freedom of movement to simple routes in straight lines, the player can only choose his path at cross roads. To move forward the player has to solve many puzzles and defeat the heaven smiles standing on his path, while using the specific skills of each personality.
Thus Dan Smith has the option to use a gun that shoots demonic bullets. Kaede Smith, the only female personality, is armed with a precision rifle and has the ability to break down some barriers blocking the way by using her "blood shower". Coyote smith, thanks to his thief abilities can pick locks and make big jumps to reach places from a height. The young Con Smith moves with dazzling speed, and can sneak in small passages inaccessible for other personalities. The albino Kevin Smith, use knives and can become invisible. Mask de Smith, a former professional wrestler armed with two grenade launchers, can use his monumental force to clear the way. At last Garcian Smith is the only personality who is able to bring back to life the personalities fallen in battle.
To get rid of heaven smiles, the player has to switch in a subjective view, and revealing these invisible enemies with a scan, and then touch their weakness points and make them explode into red confetti, which fill a gauge, and then unlock or improve the abilities of the characters.
With its disturbing atmosphere, its surprising gameplay and its captivating but hard to follow story, Killer 7 has divided the opinion among gamers. Some hate this game, other find it awesome.
