Chaos Overlords is a turn-based strategy game developed by Stick Man Games and published by New World Computing, released in 1996 and in 1998 in Europe and Japan. It is a single-player and multiplayer game (2-6 players).
This game was generally well-received b y critics; it was praised for its addictive qualities, ability to generate depth from a simple game concept, but also for the clarity of its design and its exciting and captivating gameplay.
Chaos Overlords takes place in a dystopian cyberpunk future. In 2046 private industries started to purchase bankrupt national governments. And in 2050, all governments had merged under one corporation, the World Unit Solidarity (WUS).
But this organization became a corrupt monopoly, and attempted to control the population by instituting censorship and banning ownership of weapons, drugs and pornography.
Consequently former crime-lords and corporate heads arose to exploit the people by creating chaos that is to ay sell drugs, guns, and pornography running the numbers and engaging in extortion and blackmail. These criminals are known as the Chaos Overlords, bribed WUS to avoid crackdowns. As gangs joined them and they grew in power, cities became battlegrounds for their struggles to destroy each other in pursuit of money and power.
You will play the role of a Chaos Overlord attempting to control a city. You will have to hire mercenary gangs and deploy them in the city s sectors to generate income, occupy sectors and take over the city. There is an extensive range of gangs included in the game, from Disgruntled Postal Workers to Renegade Nuns.
You can choose from 10 different victory conditions. The four timed scenarios involve attaining the most cash, sectors, support or even all three. The six objective scenarios have no time limits and require you to fulfill a specific goal, ranging from killing all other Chaos Overlords to controlling specific sectors of importance.
You can hire more than one gang that will have to complete missions like research new weapons or attack enemy installations.
Each gang may be outfitted with a weapon (ranged or melee) an item of protective gear and one miscellaneous item (performance-enhancing drugs, smoke bombs and cool shades are a few examples). Getting the right gang and researching the perfect accessories for them.
Chaos Overlords is played out an 8x8 grid, this grid represents city blocks, and each block contains three locations of different importance (hospitals, research centers, and so on) which are randomized for each new game.
In fixed position throughout the city are the headquarters of six organized crime syndicates. And at the beginning of the game you will control one of these buildings.
Chaos Overlords includes four levels of Artificial Intelligence: Goon, Criminal, Crime Lord, and Homicidal Maniac After you learn the game, you should be able to rise to Goon level easily, but even the Criminal level is challenging.
Combat, when it occurs is automated, this is a strategy game, not a tactical simulation. Action is simultaneous turn-based with an optional time-limit to keep things moving.
