Homeworld Cataclysm is a space simulation and a real-time strategy game developed by Barking Dog Studios and published by Sierra Entertainment, released in 2000. This is a single-player and multiplayer game.

Originally Homeworld Cataclysm was developed to be an expansion pack for the game Homeworld , but finally it was released as a stand-alone game.

This game was extremely well-received by critics as it is an original sequels that features many new elements such as very different designs, the graphic-engine is just nice to look at, the music is really good and the multiplayer mode provides new interesting elements. The soundtrack is also excellent.

Homeworld Cataclysm takes place in a fictional futuristic universe. The Kushan, a race of beings living on the Kharak planet, have left their planet to go back on their homeworld of Hiigara back from the Taiidan Empire (you can watch a brief video summary at the beginning of the game).

The game s resource collectors perform the same functions that they did in the original Homeworld, however, when upgraded they can be used to capture enemy vessels, harvest crystals and repair friendly vessels.

The Empire started to collapse after its failure and is fighting with itself and others in attempt to gain back power.

The story of Homeworld Cataclysm and focuses on the struggles of Kiith Somtaaw, a minor clan amongst the Kushan, as they unwittingly release a deadly menace known as The Beast on the galaxy and seek to contain it.

The game opens with the Explorer-class mining vessel Kuun-Lan (which serves as the player s mothership) conducting mining operations somewhere in deep space. After receiving a distress call from Hiigara, the ship returns to the planet to provide assistance in a battle against attacking Taiidani forces.

After the battle Kuun-Lan is ordered to find and repair a lost destroyer. After repairing the destroyer, the Kuun-Lan finds a derelict beacon pod floating in space.

After a discussion with clan elders on what to do with it, it is decided that the Kuun-Lan will seek out the Somtaaw science-vessel Clee-San to research the derelict, rather than share the discovery with another kiith and squander Sotaaw s chances for a technological edge.

In Homeworld Cataclysm is a very pleasant game; you will have to avoid to be captured by enemy ships, but also to attack your enemies. You will dispose of new units. They are also 18 new ships with unique stats and 25 new technologies to research; and 17 new single-player missions. There is also a new race called the Beast.

Concerning the multiplayer mode you can play up to 8 players in this version, and you can play the Beast race that can allow you to develop new strategy as there is a conglomeration of different units from the Somtaaw, Kushan regular, Taiidan and Turnanic Raiders fleet.

Homeworld: Cataclysm reviews

Veterans of the first game will also be quick to notice some interface changes and gameplay enhancements. However, Homeworld's beautiful graphics, top-notch sound, and 3D play mechanics remain intact.
