Dragon's Lair

PC

Dragon s Lair is an Action Interactive Movie developed by Advanced Microcomputer Systems and published by Cinematronics, released in 1983 for Arcade. This is a game that you can play up to two players (alternating turns).

Dragon s Lair is one of the first laserdisc video games. It brings many improvements to the classical game of that time.

It was several times upgraded and new versions were released for new platforms available, with new gameplay elements and better visuals and graphics, but with the same background story. There are also many sequels and spin-off of Dragons Lair.

As an arcade game Dragon s Lair was extremely well-received by critics with its movie-quality images (for its time) to go along with the action. Dragon s Lair was an unbelievable commercial success and was a classical game for plenty of children in the eighties and nineties.

Dragon s Lair features the hero, Dirk the Daring, who attempts to rescue Princess Daphne from the evil dragon Singe holed up in a wizard s castle.

The screen shows animated scenes, and you will execute an action by selecting a direction or pressing the sword button with correct timing.

The comedy of the game stemmed from not only the bizarre looking creatures and death scenes, but the fact that while Dirk was a skilled knight, he was somewhat clumsy in his efforts and was a reluctant hero, prone to shrieking and reacting in horror to the various dangers he encounters.

One of the attract mode of the game displays various short vignettes of gameplay with the accompanying narration.

And instead of controlling the character's actions directly, players control his reflexes, with different full motion video segments playing for correct or incorrect choices. You will have to defeat monsters, avoid traps and obviously to stay alive to be able to save the princess.

As Dirk you have many tasks to complete such as navigate through traps in and around a huge castle, or swinging over a lava-filled chasm; defeating ghosts, giant skeletons and huge snakes with a well-timed swing of the sword; or hopping from square to square on a chessboard-like tiled floor to evade electrocution and defeat a mysterious knight.

Some parts of the game are really funny and sometimes if you do not slash your sword when you were supposed to, another humorous death animation would follow and you will have to try again. But there is not a lot of interaction with non-playable characters.

Despite its lack of interaction, the humorous creatures and gorgeous visuals kept you glued to the screen to see what would happen next. Even if it is an old game you will be completely captivated.
