Prince of Persia: Warrior Within reviews

While Warrior Within's combat and satisfyingly long campaign improve on last year's game, the now darker tone falls somewhat flat compared to the storybook atmosphere in The Sands of Time.

I will freely admit that I had high expectations for the sequel to OPM's 2003 Game of the Year—perhaps unrealistically high. But The Sands of Time isn't just one of my favorite games of last year, it is one of my favorite games, period. Simple controls applied to sometimes-maddening physical puzzles in environments that are true works of art—these are the makings of a masterpiece in my book. It's the game I pick up when I start getting frustrated by the mediocre games that come across my desk to remind myself of how great things really can be.

Prince of Persia: Warrior Within previews

We came across a handful of new Prince of Persia 2 screens today, and while they don't reveal much new information about the game, they do hint at a few things. Most notably, they show a much darker game than either the first Prince of Persia or the E3 demo of POP2. This is not surprising, considering all the talk of how POP2 will be more mature than its predecessor, but the more we see all these dark images, the more we wonder if there will be a single bright area in the entire game.

Prince of Persia 2 is the latest game to use the 3D screenshot technology made famous by games like KOTOR, Halo 2 and Splinter Cell 3, but fortunately, the two POP 2 shots released today feature some of the nicest uses of the technology yet.
