Red Dead Revolver reviews

Rockstar's Western-themed shooter has some great style and enough fun moments to justify the rough edges.

Game fans these days are worried. They're concerned about the future of "Old West" games, a fledgling genre that's already looking barer than the Mojave itself. Dead Man's Hand, an Unreal-engine shooting gallery disguised as a Western-flick homage, came and went without much of a murmur from anyone -- including Atari, its own publisher, which didn't even bother to advertise the game. Meanwhile, Darkwatch, due out from Sammy later this year, stars undead vampire cowboys shooting rockets at each other -- original, yes, but just slightly too avant-garde for your typical Fistful of Dollars aficionado. So our only hope for now lies in Red Dead Revolver, a third-person shooter that began life at Capcom and switched publishers to Rockstar several months past. Does it live up to the enormous splash it made at the Electronic Entertainment Expo two years ago? Well, yes and no -- while it's markedly higher quality than Dead Man's Hand, it falls into some of the same traps Atari's effort got tangled in, stepping on a few brand-new ones in the process.
