Spider-Man 2

Spider-Man 2 is a videogame based on the comic's universe and on the movie by the same name. The game was developed by Treyarch and published by Activision.

The second adventure of our friendly reporter has just launched into cinemas that can already play the game. This time, Spidey will have to confront much stronger enemies and mainly the terrible Doctor Octopus.

Occurring two years after the events of the first game, Peter Parker is having trouble adjusting to his superhero status while keeping up with his civilian life. He's absent for work, school and spends less time with his friends. Quickly, the town is once again attacked by villains and you have no choice but to go fight them while you were in the middle of dinner with Mary Jane Watson and Harry Osborn. These are the daily attacks that prevent you from having any real relationship. Meanwhile, the Doctor Otto Octavious is trying to recreate Nuclear Fusion with the help of four metal arms that he controls mentally. However, the experiment goes wrong, killing his wife, and Octavius, now Dr Octopus, blames Spidey. As New York's superhero, you will have to deal with him while taking care of the many problems of the city.

Spider-Man 2 tries to improve what the mediocre first game had done, and does it for the most parts. No longer will you have to simply follow missions, you now evolve in a completely open city where you're free to swing in around as long as you want. Manhattan, Roosevelt Island, Ellis Island, and Liberty Island can all be visited and have a number of side-quest for you to perform. These will allow you to obtain "hero points" that can upgrade your skills and advance in the story.

Spider-Man 2 is good adaptation from the movie and offers enough novelties to be enjoyable. You'll particularly enjoy the web-swinging around New York and the large cast of villains. A good game for any fan of Spider-Man.

Spider-Man 2 reviews

The gameplay in Spider-Man 2 is stripped-down to a fault.

With each new system comes the inevitable flood of licensed games; the first for the DS is Spider-Man 2. And while in many ways it's just another competent beat-em-up that generally follows the movie's story, it does do a couple things well. Most notably, stunning graphics: The side-scrolling gameplay takes place in front of impressive 3D backdrops, and there's even some decent full-motion video crammed in here. Just as important, the game really nails the Spider-Man feel. Webslinging and walking on walls is a cinch and, in many cases, more fun than most of the generally average "kill X enemies or save Y hostages" action. But it gets frustrating when you're trying to find the last of 30 or so foes to destroy in the huge levels—damn you, tedious backtracking.

Since I started playing Spider-Man 2, my thoughts—much like Spidey himself—have swung all over the place. Web-slinging has never been more fun—it's a total rush, and just having all of Manhattan there as your playground makes this game worth a look. But everything else about Spider-Man seems kind of thrown together. The combat system is janky, and an ultralame supporting cast of Rhino, Shocker (again!), and Mysterio (at least the game mocks him relentlessly) doesn't help either.

Your grandpa was right, and so is Crispin: Getting there is half the fun. Web-slinging your way from crime to crime in Spider-Man is un-freaking-believably thrilling right from the start, and it only gets better as you master the nuances. Eventually, you forget you're holding a controller—you just think about, say, zagging left, bouncing off a building, and zooming around a corner into a loop-de-loop, and then you do it. Incredible.

Spider-Man 2 previews

At a press event in San Francisco last week, we got a chance to test out Spider-Man 2 for the first time since E3 2003, and with the game coming out in less than two weeks, all the parts have come together beautifully. The developers at Treyarch have keyed in on what is special about playing a game with this particular super hero: the swinging. Once you learn the technique involved, it's a profoundly rewarding feature.
