Silent Hill 2 is a survival horror released on Playstation 2 on September 24, 2001, developed and published by Konami. The game was later reissued on Xbox with the subtitle Inner fear and then a director's cut version was released in 2002 on Playstation 2 and PC. Although Silent Hill 2 is the second part of the saga, it does not directly follow the first episode and features new characters in a new story that takes place in the agonizing Silent Hill.
The new hero of the game is James Sunderland, a widower that went to Silent Hill after receiving a mysterious letter from his deceased wife that asked him to meet her at Silent Hill, the small seaside resort where they used to go on holiday. James is a man tormented who failed emotionally to turn the page of the death of his wife. The game can be interpreted as a dive in the turmoil of James. So Silent Hill and the monsters symbolize his inner demons he must confront in order to be unchained or consumed by his heavy secret.
In Silent Hill, in addition to the monsters, James will meet several characters. There are Laura a young girl who claims to know Mary, the deceased wife of James, Angela Orosco a young woman victim of rapes, Eddie Dombrowski, a plump young man a little mentally disabled, and finally Maria a sort of alter ego of Mary.
The gameplay is almost in any points similar to the first episode. It covers many places of Silent Hill, some of whom already known by those who have played the first opus. The unhealthy and shapeless monsters are still wandering in Silent hill, even more Terrifying and tormented than before. For example there is Pyramid Head, a monster with a pyramid-shaped head who drags behind him a huge kitchen knife. This monstrous character made much of an impact on many players' minds and became a sort of symbol of this episode.
Silent Hill 2 is a cult episode for many players with its incredibly complex story, its tormented characters with a deep psychology and its unique atmosphere.
