Resident Evil is a survival horror video game developed and published by Capcom, released on March 30, 1996 on Playstation. Called Biohazard in Japan, Resident Evil is the very first episode of the famous saga of horror games created by Shinji Mikami. The game has been reissued on Saturn and PC in 1997, and a Director's cut version for Playstation was released the same year. A new version of the game with new graphics was released for GameCube in 2002.
The story of the game began in 1998, around the quiet town of Raccoon City, where strange events have occurred. Many people are missing and the shredded body of a young woman was found in a river. The police then sent the Bravo unit, part of the STARS, a corps of elite soldiers, to investigate the scene. A few hours after their departure, the contact is mysteriously lost with the Bravo team. A second unit, the team Alpha, is then dispatched to the scene in order to find the Bravo team, restore contact and continue the investigation. They discovered over the Raccoon forest that the helicopter of the first team crashed. Finding no trace of the Bravo team members, Alpha team decided to inspect the surroundings. Then one of their members, Joseph Frost, is attacked and killed by a mutilated Doberman. Seeing that their weapons have no effect on the monstrous creature, the rest of the Alpha team takes flight through the forest to finally arrive at the gates of a mansion. They took refuge inside thinking to be in safety but they will soon discover that the strange building houses the source of evil.
The game offers us then to take control of 2 members of the Alpha team. The player has the choice between Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield. This choice determines the difficulty of the game, and the progress in the manor will be different from one character to another, giving two different view points of the adventure. In both cases we have to explore the mansion solving puzzles and fighting hordes of living dead and mutant creatures that haunt the place. To eliminate these nightmare creatures, the player could use a vast arsenal of weapons (Beretta, knife, shotgun, rocket launchers, etc.) that he will discover throughout the adventure.
The fear distilled by the game uses primarily surprise effects, with the sudden appearance of monsters and zombies. These effects are strengthened by the fixed cameras, giving disturbing view angles.
Resident Evil made a big impression on gamers and was the first survival horror to meet a great success. The series count now 4 opuses, excluding the Code Veronica and Gun Survivor episodes.
