Pikmin is a real-time strategy video game which came from the vivid imagination of the famous Shigeru Miyamoto, released on December 3, 2001 on Game Cube, developed and published by Nintendo.
In this game we incarnate Olimar, an interstellar traveler whose ship crashed on a strange planet inhabited by giant bellicose animals. The poor unfortunate Olimar will therefore have to search and find the various pieces of his ship, the Dolphin, scattered all over this hostile environment, in order to be able to return home. Hopefully he will be helped in his quest by strange little creatures called pikmins.
We move forward in a bucolic world looking for the lost items by giving orders to pikmins to open the way and fight hostile creatures. Captain Olimar has altogether 30 days of oxygen reserve, the air of the planet being noxious for his body. Each game day corresponds to 30 minutes in real world. We must therefore analyze the environment and lead the army of pikmin to move as quickly and effectively as possible.
This first opus count 3 different species of pikmin each with its own qualities and weaknesses. Thus red pikmins resist fire and benefit of a high attack power. Blue pikmins can swim, and yellow pikmins can be thrown in longer distance, carry small explosive nuts and resist electricity. Each species of pikmin is housed in what appears to be small ships called Onion. Bringing back each fallen enemy or pistils flower to the Onions can create new pikmins for Olimar?s army.
With its cute design and its refreshing gameplay Pikmin quickly became one of the major games of Game Cube.
One part dark struggle for survival and one part cute fairy tale, Pikmin is an engaging game with the twisted charm found in a good Tim Burton movie.
