Black

Black is a FPS developed by Criterion Games and published by Electronic Arts.

Black is a game that attracted a lot of attention due to its photo-realistic graphics (knowing that it's a PS2 game) and its Hollywood action. The game has inspired many other FPS with its destructible environments, its particular ambience, and the incredible gameplay.

The story takes place in Russia where you, Sergeant First Class Jack Kellar are being interrogated about some events that happened 4 days ago. He's being interrogated about some of the missions he was assigned and in which he disobeyed directed orders and found out some inconvenient truths. You'll relive the missions as flashbacks and understand what all the interrogation is about.

Instead of really betting on an intriguing story, Black really wanted to exploit the Ps2 capacities and make the game as close to reality as possible. Everything in the different areas is destructible and leaves permanents marks. If your character ever gets hit, his vision will start to fade, his heartbeat will get louder, and the colors will slowly vanish leaving the world in black and white. Also, an amusing detail is the fact that while you're reloading, you're not watching what's going on around you and thus the rest of the screen will be blurry.

Black is one of the most realistic FPS ever done with some very intense scenes that will actually make you feel you're a part of the game. The game is beautiful and just for that, it should be played.

Black reviews

Black's first few levels are exciting, but the action movie formula wears thin fast, and the game's over not long after.

Prepare for the true story behind Black's creation: "We had just come out of a meeting where we had a massive argument for four hours over what style jeans the character in our third-peson shooter would wear," laughs Black Creative Director Alex Ward. "So I suggested we make a first-person shooter, because there's no character onscreen and we're not going to argue over what color the stop is on the AK-47."

Criterion, the Brits behind car-crunching classic Burnout, are addicted to danger. "If we stand for anything," admits Producer Jeremy Chubb, "it's blowing s*** up." Little wonder then that they liked what they learned on a Nevada vacation. "We paid some American lunatics to let us fire machine guns and came away saying, 'This is fast cars--it's exhilarating, it's frightening, it's lethal, and it's what shooting in games should be like, but isn't.'"
