War of the Worlds is a real-time strategygame developed by Rage Software and published by GT Interactive, released in 1998 for PCs and the PlayStation. This is a single-player game.
This game received generally positive reviews from the gaming press; it was praised for its innovative and original gameplay (for its time), it a fun and pleasant game; it was also a bite criticized concerning some technical problems within the game.
War of the Worlds is based on the novel The war of the Worlds written by H.G.Wells and on Jeff Wayne s Musical version of The War of The Worlds. It takes place in the past in 1898, in Great-Britain, and the game itself is divided into 30 sectors.
At the beginning of the game you learn that the Martians (evil aliens) have left their homeplanet with an armada of spaceships to conquer the Earth and steal all its resources, as their own planet is completely ruined and depleted. These nasty aliens are also craving for human blood.
In War of the Worlds you will have the possibility to choose to play as the Martian, who dispose of superior technology (weapons, etc.), with powerful but expensive war machines that you will be able to use during the campaign against Great-Britain and the rest of the World.
But you can also choose to play on the human side. The human beings appear to be largely weaker than the Martians, but they are numerous. So your goal is to turn back the alien onslaught before they succeed in completing their evil plans.
Each sector you hold can be examined by your forces in detail in a separate Battle Map. The player can set up unit and structure building tasks and queues here. You have to build up your forces, as well as your production facilities within your sectors before the enemy can launch their attack. You also have to research new technologies, construct new buildings, and build new military units to win the game and save your specie.
In War of the Worlds, on the contrary to most of the RTS game, the units you will use consist of multiple vehicles, except for highly specialized or utility units. As it is said above the Martians use extremely powerful weapons which can provoke a lot of damage. When you will play on their side you can expect to be attacked by more than a hundred of human vehicles in a single battle, on some occasions.
On the other side the Humans have smaller, weaker vehicles, but have more units and quicker build time. The humans rely mostly on mobile artillery, World War One tank, and ironclad warships (water units) that can devastate Martian defenses, while requiring the Martian ground forces to wade out into the ocean to retaliate.
The resources system is also different compared to other RTS games, they are not used to build or purchase units. Instead, each sector has three resources (Steel, Oil, and Coal for the Humans and Heavy Elements, Copper and Human Blood for the Martians) in certain levels of abundance.
