Valkyrie Profile is an RPG released on August 29, 2000 on Playstation in North America, developed by Tri-Ace and published by Enix. This game was reedited on PSP on July 18, 2006 under the name of Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth . The story of Valkyrie Profile takes place in a world based on Norse mythology.
Somewhere in Midgard, the world of humans, a girl named Platina decides to flee his village affected by poverty, after learning that her parents decided to sell her as a slave. With her friend Lucian, she went through the mountains near the village. They arrived in the Weeping Lily Meadow. Platina died peacefully in the in the arms of Lucian from the toxic pollen of the flowers.
Decades later, Odin, Lord of Asgard, seeing the end of the world coming: the Ragnarok, which will see the Ases gods opposed to the Vanes gods, decides to appeal the Valkyries to fetch warriors who will swell the ranks of the Ases' army. The Valkyrie Lenneth is then requested by Odin and his wife Freyja to fetch the souls of valiant fighters fallen in battle in Midgard'
The player embody the valkyrie Lenneth in a touching and sad adventure filled with tragic stories. Each character that may become an Einherjar and leave Midgard for Valhalla where Odin awaits undergoes dramatic and poignant events at the end of which Lenneth will propose to reclaim his soul. Each Einherjar recruited comes lend a hand to Lenneth during the fights. In addition to her recruitment mission, Lenneth will have to visit many dungeons to eradicate the evil they contain.
Four heroes, including Lenneth, take part in turn-based battles. Each of the party members is assigned to one of the button of the controller (round, cross, triangle and square). The player must then launch attacks with these buttons, trying to create effective combos with the characters. By playing on the proper timing and using good combinations of attacks the player can prevent the enemy from attacking. More damage are inflicted to the opponents more they drop crystals and gems. The crystals determine the mount of experience that the group will earn at the end of the battle, while gems fill a gauge to launch a devastating attack.
The game is divided into several chapters (depending on the level of difficulty chosen). At the end of each chapter Lenneth must send some Einherjars to the Valhalla. Each time we have to try to send the people requested by Freyja. This will determine the success of missions undertaken by Eiherjars in the field of gods.
There is still much to say about this great RPG. With its touching characters, its exciting and arduous adventure, its effective and well-conceived gameplay and its unique atmosphere Valkyrie Profile is one of the best current RPG.
