Final Fantasy III is an RPG released on Nintendo DS on November 14, 2006, developed by Matrix Software and published by Square Enix. This game is the remake of Final Fantasy III developed by Squaresoft and released on NES in 1990. Therefore the game was subjected to a total graphic overhaul and pass to the 3D. The game system remains unchanged (though the combat system has been somewhat refined), and concerning the scenario, only the beginning of the game has been somewhat modified, adding a personal history for each character. The game also uses the features of the DS, the double screen and the touch screen.

Unlike the original Final Fantasy III, the player doesn't take control a group of anonymous orphans, because this time the characters have names and their own background. The main character is named Luneth, a young man brave and curious who grew up in the village of Ur and was raised by the old Topapa. Arc is a faithful friend of Luneth, orphan and raised by Topapa too. However, he is rather shy and less courageous than Luneth. Sedate and book lover, he seems to be predisposed for magic. Refia, the only girl of the group, was raised by Taca a blacksmith of Kazus village which is located south of Ur. She joined Luneth and Arc after they have helped her to save her village from a terrible curse. The last member of the group is called Ingus, a proud soldier of the kingdom of Sasoon who joined Refia, Arc and Luneth after having saved the Princess Sara. The four companions will thereafter become the heroes of light. Appointed by the light crystal they will have to restore the world undermined by the darkness.

Final Fantasy III was the first episode of the saga to introduce the job system. There is therefore obviously this system in its remake on DS. You can choose to allocate a specific class for each hero. Initially only the class of Freelance is available. Although many others jobs couls be unlocked after each discovery of the different crystals. There are ultimately no less than 22 different jobs, such as white mage, specializes in the health magic, black mage, which uses offensive spells, thief, which allows to steal gils (currency of the game) and items from the enemies, Bard, a musician who plays music that have different effects on allies and enemies, or summoner, a magician who can invoke powerful mystical creatures. Each job has its own techniques and powers, as well as strengths and weaknesses. We must therefore to build a team with complementary jobs in order to be as effective as possible during the numerous battles.

The fights occur randomly while the player travels through the world map or explores the dungeons and other hostile environments. The four heroes participate to the clashes that are turn-based. The fighting system is similar to that of the first Final Fantasy episodes, the fastest characters attack firstly. In order to defeat the opponents, the player has to use effectively and strategically the attacks and skills of characters, depending on their job and the enemies they are facing. Some battles are very tough, so we have to be well prepared and even buy items at the village shops.

Final Fantasy III DS manages to renovate successfully a masterpiece of the video game. With an effective combat system, especially thanks to the brilliant job system, its vast universe, and its fascinating adventure, Final Fantasy III is one of the best RPG on the Nintendo DS.

Final Fantasy III reviews

Not only is this a nicely done remake of an influential, little-seen early chapter from this long-running role-playing series, it's also an all-around solid RPG.
