Resident Evil Zero is a survival horror released on GameCube on November 11, 2002, developed and published by Capcom. This episode of the famous saga created by Shinji Mikami takes place chronologically just before the events of the first Resident Evil. This time we take control of Rebecca Chambers, a young rookie of the STARS, medic of the Bravo team, already appearing in the adventure of Chris Redfield in the first episode.

The story begins when a train crossing the mountains of Arklay, near the town of Raccoon City, is attacked by mutant leeches manipulated by a mysterious figure dressed all in white. Some time later, the Bravo intervention group of STARS is sent to the forest of Raccoon to investigate strange events. Following an engine failure, the helicopter of the Bravo team is forced to crash land in the midst of the forest. Once on the ground they discover an army jeep with two dead soldiers on board. They found very quickly that the jeep was designed to lead a criminal convicted for murder named Billy Coen to his place of execution. Finding no trace of the murderer, members of the team Bravo decide to split in order to conduct research separately. The heroin of the game, Rebecca Chambers, then discovers the train, strangely immobile. She is suddenly attacked by a swarm of leeches, but is saved in extremis by Billy Coen. The two characters will then be forced to play along in order to survive the nightmare in which they are immersed, and fight zombies, leeches and other monstrous creatures which will stand up on their way.

This episode of Resident Evil brings answers to many questions left unresolved in the first opus, particularly concerning the Bravo team Bravo. Then we learn all about the events that took place before the arrival of the Alpha team , and the reason for the proliferation of the T virus.

In terms of gameplay the game is similar to the other opuses. There are the same commands of movements, the same inventory management, the chests to store the objects, and the typewriters for saving data. However, the game features a system of cooperation between Rebecca and Billy called Zapping Partner. This system actually allows moving from one hero to another by simply pressing a button on the gamepad in order to solve puzzles.

Resident Evil Zero has few innovations compared to the other episodes of the series. Apart from the Partner Zapping the game offers no significant improvement in the gameplay. But its story revelations enriching the mythology of Resident Evil bring a real interest in the eyes of the uncompromising fans of the series.
