Silent Hill is a survival horror game released on Playstation, on January 31,1999 in USA, developed and published by Konami. Providing a fundamentally different approach compared to its rival series Resident Evil, Silent Hill has been able to become a benchmark of survival horror games.
Silent Hill has managed to surprise gamers by its unhealthy universe, its oppressive atmosphere and its soundtrack of quality, composed by the brilliant Akira Yamaoka, that reinforce the immersion. A throbbing fear accompanies the player throughout the game. Unlike a horror occurring by surprise as in Resident Evil, Silent Hill has a more suggested, psychological horror. The player is constantly immersed into a dense fog or opaque darkness, only illuminated by the dim light of a flashlight.
The monsters of the game, tortured and unhealthy, with a disturbing design, do not arise by surprise. Their appearance is always announced by the crackle from another world made by the portable radio of the hero. Most often the best option is to flee to avoid confrontation in order to keep precious ammunitions and medicines.
The history of the game begins when Harry Mason and his adopted daughter Cheryl are on the road to Silent Hill, a small remote seaside resort. Harry decided to take his daughter on vacation in this city after she had insisted to get there, for no apparent reason. But that is disturbing because the girl has been found by Harry and his wife seven years ago, abandoned around Silent Hill, and Cheryl has never been made aware of the existence of that city. Intrigued, Harry took the decision to go with her there. However, at night, on steep roads leading to Silent Hill, a mysterious silhouette appeared suddenly in the middle of the road. Harry turned the steering wheel violently to avoid it, which made him leave the road. The shock of the accident made him lose consciousness. After he came to life he realized that Cheryl had disappeared. While searching around, he saw that he had arrived to Silent Hill.
Thus begins the descent into hell of Harry in the cursed town of Silent Hill.
