Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is a 2D action / adventure game released on Playstation on October 2, 1997 in USA, developed and published by Konami. It was adapted on Saturn in 1998, and then reappeared for download on Xbox Live and the Playstation store. This is the first episode in which Koji Igarashi, the developer that gave a second youth to the series, held a decisive role in its elaboration. The stunning charac-design is provided by Ayami Kojima, and the music was composed by the brilliant Michiru Yamane.
In this episode, the player does not incarnate a member of the Belmont family, which have the legendary whip called ?vampire killer ", but the son of Dracula: Alucard. Half-human half-vampire, Alucard decided to axaken from his deep sleep to prevent the next resurrection of his father, because the Belmonts are reported missing.
This episode is a real turning point in the history of the series with an evolution system borrowed from the RPGs. Thus Alucard can gain experience and rise in level, which increases his strength and his powers. Not having the whip "vampire killer", Alucard fight with various weapons, such as swords, masses, or even katanas. He is also more agile and maneuverable than the previous heroes of the series, making gameplay more flexible.
He has to explore the castle of his father progressing and unlocking new paths using the powers obtained after slaying impressive bosses, incredibly well designed and animated. In addition to powers such as the double jump, Alucard can learn magic spells to decimate Dracula?s minions.
With its beautiful 2D design, its soundtrack of quality, its refreshing and exciting gameplay, and its long and absorbing adventure, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is for many the best episode of the series.
Wow. That's the first word that comes to mind when discussing Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. I knew that Konami's decision to keep Castlevania 2-D would insure rock-solid gameplay, but I wasn't prepared to be equally blown away by Symphony of the Night's graphics. The hand-drawn graphics perfectly match the gothic tone of the game (I couldn't imagine doing it with polys), and the animation is some of the best ever.
