Overlord is an action adventure video game developed by Triumph Studios and published by Codemasters, released between 2007 and 2008 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PCs. This game features single-player, multiplayer and cooperative modes.
This game generally received positive reviews from the gaming press; it was praised for its extremely beautiful fantasy environments and visuals, as well as its role-playing elements, it features an interesting and captivating storyline. An extension pack entitled Overlord Raising Hell was released on February 2008.
Overlord takes place in an unnamed fantasy world, where you will play as a resurrected warrior simply called as the Overlord who controls over hordes of gremlin-like creatures known as minions.
You have to determine his motivations and personality, like in Fable you can decide to make your character more or less evil. Indeed your character is a ruthless and malevolent overlord who cares for nothing but power and chaos. Your character will remain silent all the time and you will be able to perform some basic magic and melee attacks.
Your mission consists of defeating seven corrupt ruling heroes in order to reconquer the land and establish your lordship over its inhabitants. So you will have to control at the same time your army and defeat the seven heroes, who in the past slew the Overlord s predecessor, and have since be corrupted by power. Each of these seven heroes represents one of the seven deadly sins (lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, pride).
When you kill a man or a beat, it leaves behind a little piece of life essence that you can collect and store. Each of this piece of life essence allow you to summon another minion for your army; but there is a limit to the number of minions your can have at your command.
There are four goblins races, each of which has their own color and abilities; browns are melee fighters, blues can revive defeated minions and also swim, reds throw fireballs at enemies, but also can put out fires and are immune to fire attacks, and finally greens can backstab enemies and can clear poisonous gas and plants.
Your minions can complete several tasks like attacking your enemies, collect useful things and use them, like pieces of armor; if it is gold, or a potion that can restore health so they will bring it back to you. You will also need to find lots of quest-specific items that require a team of minions to carry to specific locations..
Overlord offers several multiplayer modes; there is Slaughter that pits two Overlords against each other in a head to head combat with hundreds of minions; there is also Survival in which two Overlords team up against large armies of enemies; and Pillage that is a competition in which two Overlords and their minions compete to see who can pillage and plunder the most gold in a selected amount of time.
The game is also available to play with a subscription to GameTap and can be downloaded on their Deluxe player.
Codemasters has gone peeking around the dark recesses of my heart and discovered the glimmering of two things that make me happy: tormenting peasants until they wish they were dead, and Jim Henson movies. I'd be annoyed at the apparent invasion of my privacy if not for the fact that the result is a game of perfect, cruel hilarity. Err...the good kind, not the "this game is making me suffer and is laughing about it" kind.
