Halo Wars is a real-time strategy video game developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft Game Studios. The game will be launched exclusively for the Xbox 360.
After having conquered the FPS world with the Halo series, Ensemble Studios dares to introduce it in the very competitive world of real-time strategy.
Set in 2531 (21 years before Halo: combat evolved), Halo Wars starts after the fall of the first planet to the hands of the Covenant and the discovery of a forerunner artifact. Realizing the menace of the extraterrestrials, the UNSC will launch its army to stop any other planet from falling to their enemies. This time, you won't save the world as one soldier but you'll have to use an entire army.
Like any strategy game, the view is from above and you control all sorts of vehicles and units. Of course all of them have been seen in the FPS games. The game really bets on the combats and leaves aside the economy (even if resources are a key element for success). In the campaign mode, you will use the forces of UNSC against the mighty Covenant. Your enemies will also be playable but uniquely in battle mode (or the equivalent with a different name) as well as online.
Halo Wars seems to have what it takes to make a name for itself in the real-time strategy world and is highly anticipated by the gaming community. More should be revealed as we get closer to the launch date which should be in the first half of 2009.
