Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard is a role playing video game developed and published by Atlus. The game is exclusive to the Nintendo DS.
The RPG genre is perfectly adapted to the possibilities of the DS. Atlus proves it with this sequel of Etrian Odyssey. Most faults that the first one had have been corrected and new features added. However, it remains an Etrian Odyssey.
In the Grand Duchy of High Lagaard, there is a floating castle. It is said that the "Grail of Kings" is kept there but heavily guarded by a gigantic maze. The Duke of the region is interested in obtaining such artifact and starts recruiting adventures to find out how to get through the maze. You and your friends are recruited to discover the secrets of the Yggdrasil Labyrinth, and eventually reach the skies.
This labyrinth is inside a huge magical tree and is divided in different levels. Advancing in first person view you'll have to defeat many enemies in turn based battles. The difficulty of the game, and its originality, is due to the absence of maps and you're going to be on creating your own, through the touch screen. The maze is really elaborated and you might get lost a couple of times (especially if you don't keep your map updated). You'll have five characters in your party at all times that you will create among a total of 12 types. Each one of them should have at least one special ability and you'll be able to go back to town to switch party members.
Etrian Odyssey is good game that offers a different experience than the classic RPGs. However, due to its extreme difficulty, it is dedicated to the hardcore fans of the genre as others will quickly throw their console out the window.
